Police Arrest Third Newark Suspect in February Shooting

Newark Police reports the arrest of Antonio M. Ortiz, 22, of Newark, the third suspect apprehended in connection with a shooting that occurred on Wednesday, February 21st.

According to a statement released by police at approximately 4:25 p.m., police responded to the 100-block of Pennington Street on a call of shots fired.

Police say officers observed a handgun that was placed inside a garbage can on Delancy Street and received a report of a man who had been shot arriving at University Hospital.

Officers also located a second victim, Lateef Allen, 33, of Newark, who was shot then transported to University Hospital for treatment.

Detectives investigating the incident identified Lateef Allen as a suspect in this shooting.

Police arrested Allen on February 21st and charged him with Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

Detectives further developed sufficient evidence to identify Brel Elam, 20, of Newark, as a second suspect in this shooting and secured a warrant for his arrest on charges of two counts each of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

He is further charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Conspiracy authorities say.

Officers arrested Elam on Tuesday, March 6th without incident police said.

Police also identified Antonio M. Ortiz as a third suspect and obtained a warrant for his arrest. Police apprehended Ortiz on March 6th without incident then charged him with two counts each of Aggravated Assault and Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, along with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and Conspiracy.

These charges are merely accusations.

Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
