Newark Shooting Suspect Apprehended

A 33-year-old man suspected of firing a handgun at a woman following a dispute in Newark was taken into custody today, according to Newark Department of Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose.

Police on November 24, 2017, shortly before 12:45 a.m., responded to the 100-block of North 12th Street on report of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers learned a man fired a handgun at a woman following a dispute. No one was reported injured as a result of this shooting.

Fugitive Apprehension Team Detectives developed evidence identifying Javier Ortiz as a suspect in this shooting and a warrant for his arrest was issued on charges of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose and Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession.

Detectives today arrested Ortiz without incident.

These charges are merely accusations. The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
