Police are checking the area of 16th Avenue and Bergen Street for a crime scene after a shooting left a man dead this afternoon.
Officials at the University Hospital contacted Newark Police when an unconscious male victim was dropped off by private vehicle at the emergency room suffering gunshot wounds at around 1:35 p.m.
Doctors immediately began surgery on the victim while police collected evidence to determine a motive for the shooting.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
UPDATE 3:35 p.m.: This is a homicide investigation. This is the first homicide for Newark in 2018.
