Police Officer Struck and Injured by Gunfire in Newark's South Ward; Suspect Shot

A police officer this afternoon was rushed to University Hospital after being struck in the leg in Newark after responding to an armed robbery in progress, according to officials.

The wounded officer is  a member of the Newark Police Department and is expected to survive according to Mayor Ras Baraka.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital after he was struck and wounded by gunfire. The suspect's injuries are considered non-life threatening according to the Mayor. 

The officer responded to 301 Clinton Avenue for a report or an armed robbery in progress shortly before 3 p.m.

As the officer attempted to apprehend the armed suspect along with the help of civilians, a shot was fired, striking the officer in the leg.

"The police officer was in the act of duty and responding, helping the community, and the community helped him," Baraka said.

Residents in the area said that the street-comprised of two apartment buildings and a church-has had a 24-hour Newark Police detail blocking both corners of the street for the last three years. 

Information on the identity of the suspect or the charges against him were not immediately available.
