UPDATE: Essex Sheriff Officer Shoots, Kill Alleged Bank Robber in Orange

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino has announced that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Professional Standards Bureau is investigating a police involved shooting in Orange, this afternoon.

Authorities said, at approximately, 5:28 PM, there was a report of a robbery at a PNC Bank branch in Orange.

Two detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office were in the area and came upon the suspect, who was armed with a handgun.

The suspect ignored the commands of the officers, and at this point, it appears that one officer discharged his weapon striking the suspect authorities said.

EMS rushed the suspect to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 6:15 p.m.

Police recovered the suspect’s weapon and a bag containing proceeds from the robbery.

The identity of the suspect is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation is ongoing.

Attorney General guidelines require all county Prosecutor’s Offices to respond to incidents whenever a law enforcement officer discharges a weapon.
