Gunfire Erupts in Newark's Central Ward; One Injured

If you are heading out to the first Sunday church service or venturing in from work, you need to know that there is a crime scene established in a neighborhood in Newark's Central Ward as police are on the scene investigating a shooting with injuries reported at this time.

Reports of shots fired sent police to the 100 block of Springfield Avenue at around 6 am where officers located one person struck by apparent gunfire at that location.

The suspect reportedly ran from the scene immediately after the shooting.

The extent of the victim's injuries have not been confirmed at this time.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.

Avoid the area for the investigation.

**UPDATED 8:09 am** A preliminary investigation indicates that a person in the vehicle was reportedly playing with a gun when it fired and struck a passenger inside the vehicle. The victim's injuries are non-life threatening according to police officials.
