Running for cover, school administrators and security scrambled parents and their children back into the schools where the facility was immediately placed on lockdown.

A large police response moved in on the area having cops immediately close off several streets around Quitman Street and stood guarded around the school's reports said.

A search of the area had police locate a female victim, who was later identified as a parent of a student at the school, suffering a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the hand.

The woman was transported to University Hospital where she was treated and released.

Preliminary reports indicated that the woman who was reportedly accompanied by a male came under attack by one or more suspects who began to fire shots at the pair near Montgomery Street.

It is not immediately clear if the woman was the intended target or if the male suffered any injuries during the shooting.

Students, faculty, and staff at the schools remained in a lockdown status for about 45 minutes and were not injured during the incident according to reports.

Police set up a crime scene where they located about a half dozen shell casings and other evidence.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation by Newark Police.
