Woman’s Purse Stolen at Gunpoint While Walking Home from Bus Stop in Vauxhall; Newark Man Arrested

Police in Union announced the arrest of a 39-year-old Newark man accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint.

According to authorities, at approximately 4:25 p.m. Sunday, police headquarters received a 9-1-1 call from a woman reporting she was robbed at gunpoint somewhere in Vauxhall. 

Officials say the victim was reportedly walking home from the bus stop when a car pulled up to her and a passenger got out. The armed man pointed a gun at her and took her purse which contained her cell phone and other valuables. 

According to authorities, the man got back into the car and fled the area. 

 

The woman continued home and called the police from her house.  Police say responding officers ultimately retraced her steps home, established a crime scene and ultimately obtained surveillance footage from an area home.

 

Investigating officers managed to track the location of the victim’s missing cell phone to Badger Avenue Newark.

As soon as police arrived in the area, they saw a man who resembled the suspect in the video according to police.

They stopped the man and ultimately found that he actually had warrants from Union Police Department then detained him. 

Police said the victim was brought to the scene and identified the man as the person who robbed her. 

Officials say he was arrested and charged with the robbery, but he did not have the gun with him.  However, he was found in possession of the victim’s bus pass.

 

A search warrant from a Union County Superior Court Judge for the suspect’s home was granted. 

 

Officers William Young and Joe Peterson who were positioned outside of the home saw the suspect toss a backpack onto the roof of the house next door. 

 

Officers called for the Newark Fire Department to use a ladder to get onto the roof, where the backpack was recovered. Inside authorities found a Rohm .38 Special handgun that was fully loaded, along with other stolen items from victims.

 

Detective Mirao is still trying to identify the car and the getaway driver involved in the crime. and identify the getaway driver.

 

The man arrested and charged with the armed robbery and possession of the gun is Rasheed Waller, 39, from Badger Avenue in Newark.

Officials say Walker is being held at the Union Police Department headquarters until he is sent to the Union County Jail, where he will have a bail hearing.
