Woman Shot in Newark's Upper West Ward

Police in Newark are on the search for a gunman that fired multiple shots in a location in Newark's West Ward that struck and injured a female during the overnight hours.

Gunfire erupted in the 100 block of Sunset Street at around 1:20 a.m. sending police to the scene after residents dialed 911 when they heard the loud popping noises.

Rapid responding West District units arrived at the scene and found evidence that a shooting occurred and a female victim bleeding from the leg after suffering from an apparent gunshot wound according to preliminary reports.

Police say a black male suspect approximately 5'9" tall with a short haircut and last observed wearing dark clothing ran from the scene immediately after the shooting.

EMS transported the victim to University Hospital where she is expected to survive her injuries according to reports.

The motive for the shooting has yet to be determined.
