By: Richard L. Smith A woman was hospitalized following a daytime shooting in Newark’s South Ward Saturday afternoon, according to police officials. The incident took place just before 1:45 p.m. when gunfire erupted near 19 Stratford Place, triggering a ShotSpotter activation that alerted police to multiple rounds fired in the area. Upon arrival, officers located a woman who had been struck by a bullet in her buttocks. While providing immediate aid to the victim and preserving the crime scene with police tape, officers called for additional backup due to a large crowd forming nearby. The woman was transported to University Hospital in Newark. Her condition has not been publicly released, but her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Investigators recovered shell casings from the scene, and the motive for the shooting remains under investigation. At this time, no arrests have been made and no additional victims have been reported. Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact the Newark Police Department’s tip line.
