There were severe injuries reported for a woman who sustained multiple gunshot wounds after a shooting in a Newark neighborhood overnight.
Police responded to reports of shots fired that rang out near a church in the vicinity of 235 12th Avenue -at South 12th Street- shortly before 10:45 p.m.
Officers responded to the scene found a woman shot several times and a man suffering a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the leg according to preliminary reports.
Both victims were rushed to University Hospital for treatment.
Police set up a crime scene that stretched about a block long on South 12th Street and closed off a portion of 12th Avenue where they searched near the graveyard and a church for evidence to support a motive for the shooting.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
