Woman Critically Injured After Being Struck, Trapped Beneath Vehicle in Newark

Police in Newark are investigating a pedestrian strike that left a woman critically injured early Monday morning.

According to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, the incident occurred at approximately 1:28 a.m. on January 5, when police and firefighters responded to the 300 block of Market Street for a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

 

Investigators said the woman crouched down near the vehicle to pick up an item from the ground just as the driver began to pull forward. 

She was struck and became trapped beneath the vehicle.

 

Newark firefighters rescued the victim, who was transported to University Hospital for treatment, where she is reported to be in critical condition.
