Warrant Issued for Man who Cut Woman Then Set her Clothes on Fire in Newark

Police officials in Newark are reporting that a warrant has been issued for the arrest of Mr. Chams Hazel, 26, of Newark, on charges of Aggravated Assault, Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, Burglary, Terroristic Threats, Criminal Mischief and Arson in violation of New Jersey’s Domestic Violence laws in an incident that occurred on Friday, November 2nd.

According to police at approximately 10 p.m., police responded to the 100-block of Hawkins Street on a call of a man chasing a woman with a knife.

Police say the man assaulted a woman he knows after entering her residence and chasing her onto the street.

The suspect cut the victim before returning to her residence and setting a fire.

Responding officers contacted members of the Newark Fire Division, who determined that a pile of clothing was set on fire inside the residence.

Detectives investigating this incident have identified Chams Hazel as a suspect in this incident and secured a warrant for his arrest.

Police described Hazel as 5’9” tall and 170 lbs.

Police say he has a medium brown complexion with black hair and brown eyes.

While police are actively searching for Hazel, they seek the public’s assistance in quickly locating and removing him from Newark streets.
