Violent Multi-Car Crash Kills One, Injures Two in Newark's South Ward

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office are investigating a deadly crash that occurred Saturday morning in Newark's South Ward.

The violent multi-car crash happened just outside the Weequahic Park on the Frelinghuysen Avenue and Meeker Avenue side of the park shortly before 3:00 a.m.

Exact details regarding what caused the crash is pending a full investigation, but according to preliminary reports, several 911 calls into headquarters reporting an accident with injuries rushed the Newark Emergency Responders contingent to the scene where they arrived and observed two severely damaged vehicles with trapped occupants.

EMS transported a male and female to University Hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries while University Hospital rescue and Newark Firefighters attempted to extricate an unconscious person inside one of the vehicles.

The trapped victim was pronounced dead a short time later according to authorities.

Police detoured light traffic on Frelinghuysen Avenue in both directions while detectives from the Prosecutor's Office investigated what cause of the crash.
