UPDATE: Woman Dies After Being Shot in Newark's West Ward

Residents in the 30's block of Norwood Street said they heard as many as three loud popping noises then within several minutes, the sound of blaring police and emergency responder sirens enveloped their West Ward community early Tuesday morning.

The time was approximately 2:15 a.m. where officers arrived at the scene and found a female victim reportedly suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen from what is believed to have resulted from a stray bullet entering the woman's living space.

EMS rushed the woman to University Hospital where at the time her injuries were reported as non-life threatening.

RLS Media was informed that the extent of the woman's injuries took a turn for the worst; ultimately resulting in her death early Tuesday morning.

According to family members, the woman's name is **Ms. Michelle Newkirk and she is a 27-year-old** Newark resident.

Our staff reached out to The Essex County Prosecutor's Office, and a spokesperson confirmed that their Homicide Task Force is looking into the death of a female who suffered a gunshot injury on Norwood Tuesday morning.

The spokesperson said the shooting was followed by the woman passing away, but the spokesperson would only say that information surrounding the circumstances of the incident and the woman's exact cause of death is in its early stages of an active and ongoing investigation by the Homicide Task Force.

There were no arrests reported.
