UPDATE: Teenaged Boys Injured in Vailsburg Park Shooting on Newark-Irvington Border

Newark Irvington Township

There were non-life threatening injuries reported for two teenaged boys who came under gunfire attack from another juvenile while inside an Essex County Park on Thursday afternoon.

According to officials, the incident happened near the Oraton Parkway side of Vailsburg Park, at approximately 4 p.m., where two groups of teenagers reportedly gathered near the baseball field.

Police say, it is not immediately clear what actually transpired during the incident that caused a teenaged boy -who was in one of the groups- to pull a gun and began to fire at members of the other group; causing all the teenagers to run from the park.

Essex County Sheriff's officers, who were already on patrol inside the park, heard the gunfire and requested back up from Irvington and Newark Police Departments.

Both police agencies canvassed their sides of the border while Essex County Sheriff officers arrived at the scene and located a crime scene inside the park according to officials.

Irvington Police reportedly found both victims -in separate locations- near the park suffering what officials said were gunshot graze injuries. The boys were between the ages of 14-15 years old and the suspect was around the age of 16 police officials said.

The victims were transported to University Hospital for treatment then released to their guardians.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation according to police.
