UPDATE: Teen Girl Struck by Gunfire in After School Shooting in Newark
The person struck by gunfire on a Wednesday afternoon in Newark's West Ward was identified as a 16-year-old girl.
Several bystanders rushed to the aid of the girl after gunfire rang out in front of a church on South Orange Avenue between 18th Street and 19th Street yesterday at around 3:30 p.m., striking her and causing non-fatal injuries.
EMS transported the girl to University Hospital where doctors treated her for the wound.
Shortly before the shooting, a crowd of teens gathered in the area with some walking home from the West Side High School when someone began shooting.
The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
There were no arrests reported.
