UPDATE: Retired Newark Officer Shoots Robbery Suspect Outside Elizabeth Carwash

The circumstances regarding an incident in which a retired Newark Police Department officer shot and injured a man who allegedly attempted to rob him early Wednesday morning are under investigation, acting Union County Prosecutor Thomas K. Isenhour has announced.

According to authorities, at approximately 5 this morning, Elizabeth Police Department officers responded to a 24-hour car wash located on Edgar Road just south of the Bayway Circle for a report of a robbery.

Upon arrival, police found both the robbery victim and the shooting victim at the scene.

The investigation revealed that the retired officer was physically assaulted just before the shooting took place. The shooting victim, 23-year-old Krishad Jones of Newark, was transported to University Hospital in Newark for emergency medical treatment.

Jones since has been charged with a single count of second-degree robbery, and he remains in police custody in the hospital.

This matter remains under investigation by the SRT and assisting law enforcement agencies.
