UPDATE: Portugal Day Newark Committee Releases Statement on Saturday Night Shooting

Newark

This is a statement released by the Newark Portugal Day Committee in regards to Saturday night shooting incident:

"We have been receiving inquiries about an incident last night emanating from Prospect St. The community should be aware that the Ironbound Portuguese festival is comprised of many independently run and operated celebrations authorized by the city of Newark.

The Portugal Day Newark committee is responsible for organizing the events located at Peter Francisco Park, the parade and many other cultural activities throughout the year. We had no incidents originating from our location last night so we cannot comment on the events occurring outside the parameters of our location.

We are also intently awaiting details to emerge.

At this point, if you have any questions, please contact the Newark Police Department.

The celebration of our culture and heritage is very dear to us and any negative incidents that occur during this weekend, regardless of the location, are worrisome and detract from the purpose and objective of the celebration.

The Portuguese community is a hard working, dignified, and respectful one. All we ask is that people come to the various locations in the Ironbound in a respectful way to join us in celebrating our culture and heritage.

It is disheartening to hear about these incidents. As usual, the actions of a few ruin it for the majority of people who show up every year to simply enjoy a festive weekend".

We wish the victims of the incident a speedy recovery.

Thank you,

Portugal Day Newark
