UPDATE: Newark Man Arrested for Shooting Woman

Officials announced the arrest of James. J. Speller, 19, of Newark for attempted murder in an aggravated assault shooting that occurred on Saturday, July 1.

According to authorities, at approximately 11:25 p.m., police responded to a call of shots fired in the 300-block of Hunterdon Street.

Upon arrival, officers found a female victim suffering from an apparent gunshot wounds at that location.

EMS transported the woman to University Hospital, where she is said to be in stable condition.

Police said Speller is also a suspect in the discharge of a firearm on Friday, June 30, 2017 at 17th and Morris avenues.

There were injuries reported in this incident.

Today police arrested Speller who they said face charges in both incidents of Attempted Murder, Aggravated Assault, two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon and two counts of Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose.

Police further charged Cheller with CDS Possession as he was in possession of 33 vials of cocaine at the time of his arrest.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
