The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation into a deadly shooting in Downtown Newark that claimed the life of a man Monday night.

Officials say, at approximately 8:25 p.m., a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire in the 80s block of Park Place, prompting Newark Police officers to respond and canvas the surrounding area.

During the search, officers located a male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest near Broad and Market streets, several blocks from where the ShotSpotter activation was initially detected.

The victim was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition but was later pronounced dead.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has been notified and is now investigating the deadly shooting.

Preliminary information indicates the suspect fled the scene and remains at large.

The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. The investigation remains active and ongoing.
