UPDATE: Man Dies from Injuries Sustained in Shooting at Newark Weequahic Park

Newark – Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino and Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura announced today that Godfrey J. Jones, Jr., 25, of Newark was shot in Weequahic Park Monday morning at approximately 9:15 a.m.

Police say Jones died because of those injuries Monday evening at University Hospital at around 5:27 p.m.

Sheriff Officers discovered the victim on a bench in the park suffering gunshot wounds.

The investigation is being handled by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force which is working with the Essex County Sheriff’s Office.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

Police say no arrests have been made.

Essex County Sheriff Fontoura’s Crime Stoppers Program is offering up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case.
