UPDATE: Man Allegedly Shoots Himself in Front of Union City Police

Police say at approximately 5:15 a.m., the Union City Police Department received a 911 call for service on the 2000 block of Bergenline Avenue in Union City.

Upon arrival, responding officers made contact with an alleged female victim. The officers were then directed by the alleged victim to a second-floor apartment.

According to police, at that location, officers were confronted by a male, 57, of Union City, who was holding a handgun.

The male then delivered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

During this incident, a Union City Police Officer deployed his Conducted Energy Device, commonly known as a “Taser.”

In accordance with the NJ Attorney General directive governing Conducted Energy Devices, the deployment is under investigation.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is actively investigating this case with assistance from the Union City Police Department and the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. Anyone with
