Update: Kenilworth, Plainfield Men Charged in Mountainside Burglaries

Police Chief Allan Attanasio of the Mountainside Police Department announced the arrest of James J. Conahn 3rd, 24, of Kenilworth and Dawud Y. Ward, 23, of Plainfield.

Chief Attanasio states that today at approximately 12:04 p.m., officers from the Mountainside Police Department responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Rutgers Road, after an alert citizen reported suspicious activity by Conahn and Ward at the residence.

The responding officers, discovered that a burglary to the residence had occurred and determined that a suspect was still inside the residence.

Additional police units from Mountainside, Westfield, Springfield, Union County Police and the Union County Sheriff’s K-9 Unit responded to the scene and assisted in the arrests.

A further investigation by Detective Sergeant Huber and Detective Bendik implicated the two to an additional burglary which had occurred on Green Briar Court in Mountainside on September 1st and a suspicious incident which occurred on Deer Path on August 24th.

Based upon approval of complaints by the Union County Prosecutors Office, both defendants were charged with the following offenses:

2 counts each of burglary, 2C:18-2a(1), 3rd degree

2 counts each of theft, 2C:20-3a, 3rd degree

2 counts each of criminal mischief, 2C:17-3, 4th degree

Bail for both suspects was set at $135,000.00 with no 10% cash option.

Unable to post bail, both defendants were remanded to the Union County Jail.
