UPDATE: Irvington Carjacker Rams Police Cars, Ensues Pursuit Through Cranford, Clark Before Crashing in Linden

A 23-year-old accused carjacker from Irvington was taken into custody Sunday after ensuring a pursuit through several Union County towns.

According to police, on December 10th at approximately 4 p.m., Clark police officer s along with officers from the Township of Cranford took Alsemaj Covington, 23, of Irvington, into custody after a police pursuit that ended in the City of Linden.

Police said Covington was pursued by Irvington police on the Garden State Parkway in a white work van that had been reported carjacked at gunpoint in Irvington.

Irvington Police broke off the pursuit on the Garden State Parkway.

Sometime after, the van was spotted in the Florence Drive neighborhood of Clark after Covington crashed through the fence of the Garden State Parkway maintenance yard.

The van then traveled into Cranford where it was confronted by Cranford patrol units. Covington then struck several Cranford patrol cars and attempted to run down an officer.

A Cranford Police Officer then pursued Covington back into Clark where both Cranford and Clark officers pursued the vehicle into the Tremley Point area of Linden before it struck a guardrail bringing the vehicle to a stop. Officers arrested Covington without incident.

Police have charged Covington with 2nd degree eluding and aggravated assault on police and was subsequently remanded to the Union County Jail.
