UPDATE: Investigation Underway into Separate Shots Fired Incidents in Newark; One Victim

Police officials in Newark are attempting to determine if a man found by residents with bullet wounds on South 14th Street suffered his injuries several blocks away Saturday morning.

According to residents in the 400 block of South 9th Street, the sound of gunfire erupted at around 4:55 a.m. prompted them to contact police who arrived and found evidence that a shooting occurred, but a search of the block indicated no victims.

A short time later, residents in the 400 block of South 14th Street were awakened from their sleep after they heard a male screaming for help at around 5:05 a.m.

According to residents, when they looked out their windows, they saw a man lying on top of a car, bleeding and in excruciating pain. Witnesses say the man attempted to get up from the hood of the vehicle but rolled to the ground.

EMS transported the unidentified man to University Hospital in serious but stable condition.

One resident, would not provide the victim's identity and stopped short of reporting where he resided, said he is known to the community and have seen him in the neighborhood a lot.

In another shooting incident, police responded to the intersection of Ross and Thorne at approximately 7:15 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports of shots fired. When they arrived, officers found shell casings and were told that a potential suspect ran through Weequahic Park immediately after the shooting.

There were no injuries reported and the Essex County Sheriff's Office was notified of the incident.

Both shootings remain under investigation.
