UPDATE: Hostage Situation Ends in Newark's East Ward

A hostage situation at the Pennington Court housing complex in Newark's East ward has come to an end with none of the hostage injured authorities said.

Police placed the suspect in custody at around 6:30 a.m. in the rear of the complex near the court yard.

Two people were taken to the hospital by EMS for unspecified minor injuries.

The investigation is active and ongoing authorities said.

UPDATE 6:50 a.m. This is a message from Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose:

"A little while ago, Newark Police SWAT officers made entry into the apartment finding 5 people being held against their will by the suspect.

There are no reported injuries. No weapons were found at this time."

"The investigation is continuing. The suspect will be evaluated at a crisis unit at a nearby hospital."

"I commend the SWAT officers for resolving the situation

without anyone being injured."

UPDATE 7:11 a.m. Police recovered an AK-47 assault weapon and bullets in the apartment.
