Several handguns were recovered and multiple suspects taken into custody following a police pursuit that ended with gunfire in Newarkâs West Ward Thursday evening around 6:30 p.m. , according to preliminary information.

Authorities say the incident took place in the area of 16th Avenue and South 11th Street, where members of the New Jersey State Police brought a chase to an end involving suspects believed to be armed.
During the course of the pursuit and subsequent investigation, at least one suspect is believed to have unintentionally discharged a weapon, striking himself, according to early reports.
As of 4:30 a.m. Friday, officials had not confirmed whether State Police troopers discharged their weapons.
No officers were reported injured. About four individuals were taken into custody reports said.
The incident remains under active investigation as authorities work to determine the full sequence of events.
Newark Police officials referred all questions regarding this incident to NJ State Police.
