UPDATE: Gunman Shoots Man Dead on South Orange Avenue in Newark

A weekend of rampant shooting violence has spilled over into the workweek, with detectives from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office leading the investigation into a shooting that left a man dead in a section of Newark Monday. 

It happened just at the border of the city's Central and West wards around 5:30 p.m. 

In the preliminary investigation, police rushed to investigate reports of shots fired that rang out in the vicinity of South Orange Avenue and South 9th Street. 

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the unidentified man suffering bullet wounds at that location, the Essex County prosecutor's Office confirmed with RLS Metro Morning crew. 

Police say the victim was rushed the short distance to  University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead late Monday night Essex County Prosecutor's Office said.

While police taped off the area, residents in the are stood behind the yellow tape and sent prayers to the victim's family. 

”There were multiple eyewitnesses who observed the broad daylight deadly shooting that occurred in front of a store”. It is not clear if authorities are close to an arrest at this time. 

The city has had just under a dozen individuals shot since Friday; with an instance of rapid gunfire in the city's South Ward unofficially classified as a mass shooting leaving four victims shot at one time.

Gunmen left about two dozen shell casings at the Chancellor Avenue shooting scene. 

There have been no arrests in any of the shootings at this time.
