UPDATE: Newark Fire Department Employee Dies in Early Morning Newark South Ward Car Crash

An early morning crash that suddenly took the life of a man in Newark's South Ward has officials from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office investigating.

Emergency responders and rescue crews rushed to the intersection of Meeker Street and Frelinghuysen Avenue at around 3 a.m. where arrived to find two badly damaged vehicle involved in a crash with trapped occupants.

The driver, Mr. Jason Edwards, was extricated from one of the vehicle's and later pronounced dead.

According to Newark officials, Edwards was an active civilian employee for the fire department.

EMS transported the occupants of the other vehicle, identified as a male and female, to University Hospital suffering non-fatal injuries.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
