UPDATE: Essex Prosecutor Continues Search for Hit-and-Run Driver That Killed Man Near Newark Church

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office seeks the public help with any information on a hit-and-run that killed a man just outside a church in  Newark's West Ward said Wednesday morning. 

 

According to information obtained from the prosecutor's office, at approximately 5:35 a.m., police were called to the intersection of 15th Avenue and 13th Street to investigate an inured person's reports. 

 

When officers arrived, they found a man lying on the ground and heavily bleeding near the Greater Harvest Baptist Church. 

Essex County authorities said the unidentified man, around 63-years-old, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:48 a.m. 

The driver of the vehicle that struck the victim sped away from the scene and remain at-large. 

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office would not release the victim's identity until next of kin were notified. 

Residents who live in the vicinity of the church told RLS Media reporters that the area is notorious for speeding vehicles and the intersection alone has had about three collisions this week. 

The investigation into the fatal hit-and-run is under investigation.
