UPDATE: East Orange Man Shot, Killed During Police Involved Shooting in Orange, Identified

Authorities have released the identity of the 24-year-old East Orange man shot and killed by police after he allegedly robbed a local PNC Bank.

According to authorities, at approximately 5:28 p.m. there was a report of a robbery at a PNC Bank branch in Orange.

Two detectives from the Essex County Sheriff’s Office were in the area and came upon the suspect, who they said was armed with a handgun.

Police said the suspect ignored the commands of the officers, and at this point, it appears that one officer discharged his weapon striking the suspect.

EMS rushed the suspect - later identified as Mr. Scott Mayfield, to University Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead at 6:15 p.m.

Police recovered the suspect’s weapon and a bag containing proceeds from the robbery.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino continues to investigate the police involved shooting in Orange.
