UPDATE: Child Struck by Gunfire in Newark's Central Ward

Newark

Newark Police officials are investigating a shots-fired incident connected to a child in the city’s Central Ward Friday evening.

A ShotSpotter detection device alerted police to over a half dozen rounds of gunfire near the intersection of Fairmount and Springfield avenues around 6:35 p.m.

When officers arrived, they taped the area off after locating multiple shell casings at the Exxon Gas Station on Springfield Avenue.

Suspects pulled up to the station and fired multiple times into the vehicle.

Police say officials at University Hospital notified police when a 9-year-old boy entered University Hospital suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot graze wound.

Medical professionals treated the boy for minor injuries while police launched an investigation into the shooting.

Police set up a crime scene near Walgreens on Springfield Avenue after believing the suspect was in the area.

Authorities would not confirm if the boy were in the targeted vehicle at this time.

The driver of the vehicle also suffered non-fatal injuries, according to reports.

No other injuries were reported.
