UPDATE: Authorities Release Names of Suspect, Victims Involved in Deadly Shooting of 8-Year-Old Newark Boy

Authorities in Essex County announced the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force has the following update on the May 3, 2023, shootingin Newark.

According to ECPO Spokesman Robert Florida, on May 3, at 8:33 p.m., Newark police responded to a report of a shooting in an apartment on the 300 block of Johnson  Avenue, Newark. 

The decedents from that shooting are Wyleek Shaw, 27 of Newark; an 8-year-old boy who will be identified by his initials (Z.L) because he is a juvenile; and the alleged suspect, Everette Rand, 29, of Newark. 

Another victim, Tajion Simmons, 24, of Fords, N.J., was treated for non-fatal injuries.

The ECPO investigation is active and ongoing.

No arrests have been made.
