UPDATE: Authorities Identify 16-Year-Old Boy Shot Dead in Newark

Newark -- Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announced today that authorities are investigating the fatal shooting of 16-year-old Rashawn Cooper of Newark.

Authorities said, last night at approximately 10:00 p.m., Newark police units responded to the 100 block of Goodwin Avenue on reports of shots fired.

Arriving officers observed an unconscious and unresponsive male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

EMS rushed Cooper to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 p.m., according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

This matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor's Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

At this time, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified Chief Finnelly said.
