UPDATE: 39-Year-Old Man Shot Dead in Newark

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens, II and Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose, III have announced that authorities are investigating a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Newark on Saturday night.

Officials say shortly after 11:00 pm on Saturday, Newark Police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of South 9th Street on reports of shots fired.

Arriving units located an unresponsive male, who was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.

The victim was transported to University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:31 pm, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor's Homicide Unit.

The victim has been identified as Rahman K. Branch 39, of Newark officials say.

The investigation is in its early stages and no suspects has been found.
