A fatal shooting that took place in Union Township this weekend is under active investigation, acting Union County Prosecutor Lyndsay V. Ruotolo and Union Police Department Director Daniel Zieser jointly announced Sunday.

Officials said the victim has been identified as Ms. Malikah Taylor, 19, of Newark.

According to officials, members of the Union Police Department responding to a residence on the 2100 block of Melrose Parkway early Sunday morning found Taylor unresponsive at that location, having sustained severe injury, according to the preliminary investigation.

Police said Taylor was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 8 a.m.

Sources told RLS Media that Taylor did not live at the home but may have been visiting a male acquaintance.

The investigation into the shooting is being led by the Union County Homicide Task Force and assisted by members of the Union Police Department, Union County Police Department Ballistics Unit, and Union County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit.
