University Hospital Walk-in Gunshot Victim Injured During West Ward Shooting Battle

Newark

Police in Newark's West Ward are looking into the motive behind a shooting that sent a man to the hospital suffering gunshot wounds.

According to police, shooters fired over a dozen rounds of bullets that stretched several blocks in the Vailsburg section around 7:26 p.m.

When several police officers arrived at the scene, they requested additional crime scene tape after they found scores of shell casings in the 20's block of Finley, 300 block of Sandford Avenue and near the intersection of Abbotsford and Sanford.

Units canvassing the area found several vehicles struck by bullets, but after they searched several blocks that border the VA Hospital, they found no victims.

A short time later, officials at University Hospital notified police of a male suffering bullet wounds.

Police say the hospital walk-in shooting victim was uncooperative with investigators, but initial information indicated that he was at the West Ward shooting scene where shooters occupying cars blasted away in the neighborhood.

Police say they detained a female who reportedly transported the victim to the hospital, but she has not been charged at this time.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
