Union Township Women say They Observed Elizabeth Man Armed with Gun

According to Union Police, at 7:04 AM Friday, a resident of Summit Road was walking her dog and saw a man run past her with a gun in his hand.

According to police, the unidentified woman called the police and officers began to look for the suspect.

Police say while en route, they received another call from a different woman who thought she was almost carjacked on Magie Avenue.

Police officials say officers responded to the area and with assistance from the Elizabeth Police Department a suspect was located in Elizabeth.

The suspect no longer had a gun at this point and the officers began to backtrack and look for the gun. Their investigative steps took them to a home on Livingston Road where a handgun was located under a car in the driveway.

A Colt 45 caliber handgun was recovered.

The suspect was placed under arrest and a further investigation was conducted into the possible carjacking according to police.

Police say the local resident reported that the suspect ran in front of her car, but there was no effort to take control of the car.

Based upon the facts at hand, there was no attempted carjacking

Police arrested Mr. Max Ortman, 24, from Elizabeth, then charged him with illegal possession of a handgun.

Police say he is being held at the Union Police Department headquarters until he is sent to the Union County Jail, where he will have a bail hearing.

Detectives are investigating the circumstances of what happened that led up to Ortman running around with the handgun in Union and Elizabeth.
