Union County Student Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Scotch Plains Crash

Scotch Plains Kenilworth

The Union County Vocational-Technical School student injured in yesterday's Cooper Road crash died in surgery, according to family.

Police responded to the 1600 block of Cooper Road shortly after 3:00 p.m. for a report of a serious crash.

Upon arrival, emergency responders extricated the sole occupant of a vehicle, 17-year-old Daniel Triano, of Kenilworth, who was driving east on Cooper Road in a 2003 Ford Focus and collided head-on with a 2012 Ford Edge.

He was subsequently flown to University Hospital in Newark where the 11th grade student died during an emergency surgery.

The driver of the other vehicle - only described as a 45-year-old Scotch Plains woman - sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

School officials announced that the district's 11 counselors would be available for grief counseling.

The crash remains under investigation.
