A Union City man has been arrested in connection with a February hit-and-run crash that seriously injured a pedestrian on 17th Street, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Investigators charged Carlos Mejia, 56, of Union City, with multiple offenses, including aggravated assault, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash resulting in serious bodily injury, assault by auto, endangering an injured victim, obstruction, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — the vehicle involved.
Several charges are also listed as domestic-violence related.
Mejia was taken into custody Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility pending his first court appearance.
The crash occurred shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday, February 22, when Union City Police responded to reports of a pedestrian struck near 17th Street and Bergenline Avenue.
Officers found a 32-year-old Union City woman suffering serious injuries at the scene. The driver did not remain.
During the investigation, authorities identified Mejia as the driver of a Ford E-450 believed to have struck the victim.
