Union City Man Accused of Assaulting Madison Police Officers

Police responding to a report of an assault took a 27-year-old Union City Man into custody after he assaulted them as well.

Madison Police were dispatched to the intersection of Main Street and Greenwood Avenue for a reported assault at approximately 8:35 a.m.

The suspect was identified as exiting a white box truck and approaching a male victim, striking and pushing him resulting in the victim falling to the ground, causing him head and neck pain.

Upon arrival by Madison Police units, a witness came forward and provided the license plate of the vehicle that the actor fled in, along with the location of the truck.

Nearby, Madison Cpl. Luis Goncalves and Lt. John Miscia met with the suspect, who was positively identified as the male who just committed the assault.

Upon meeting with the actor, identified as Julio C. Caceres, 27 of Union City, he approached both officers and began to strike both officers in the head and neck area.

Cpl. Goncalves was struck in the face by a closed fist punch. Caceres would not comply with both officer’s commands and repeatedly resisted officer’s control.

After a brief struggle, Caceres was placed in custody by both officers. He was transported to Madison Police Department where he was charged with (2) counts of 3rd degree Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, (1) count of 3rd degree Resisting Arrest, and (1) count of Simple Assault.

Caceres was later transported to the Morris County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail and he is awaiting a Morris County Superior Court appearance.

Madison Ambulance Corps was dispatched to evaluate the victim, who refused medical treatment.

Both officers sustained minor injuries and refused medical attention.
