A series of gunfire that rang out overnight in Newark left two people dead and several injured.
Police responded to shots fired calls reported in the 700 block of Springfield Ave. at around 1 a.m. Upon arrival, authorities found a victim shot in the neck and critically injured. The victim reportedly died during transportation to the hospital.
EMS transported another victim to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim's injuries was not believed to be life-threatening. A third victim walked into University Hospital suffering a gunshot wound a short time later. Police setup a crime scene and are investigating the shootings.
Police in the East Ward rushed to the scene of a shooting that left one dead and at least two others injured early this morning.
Several rounds of gunfire was heard in the area of Fleming Avenue and Christie Street at around 1:15 a.m. sending EMS to the scene where one person was shot to the leg at that location. The victim's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening. An investigation at the scene had authorities notified that a victim was transported to Jersey City Medical Center via private vehicle suffering multiple gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead a short time later.
A couple of hours later, University Hospital officials notified authorities that a third victim suffering a gunshot wound to the leg had checked into the hospital. The victim was believed to have been injured in the East Ward incident.
Both fatal shootings are under investigation by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.
