Three Men Accused of Killing a Newark Man During a Wake Get Sentenced

Newark New Jersey

Three Essex County men were sentenced today in connection with the killing of a Newark man outside a funeral home.

In April 2013, police responded to Churchman Funeral Home on 13th Avenue in Newark after Laquan Willis, 25, of East Orange, Nakeish Fleming, 27, and Robert Laboo, 30, both of Newark, went to the funeral service - on April 24, 2013 - to assault Jahud Devlin, nephew of the man in the coffin.

Once men located Devlin, they opened fire and ultimately killed him.

Devlin was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after.

During the investigation, officials discovered that the shooting was part of internal gang war.

Willis was sentenced to five years in prison after he plead guilty to reckless manslaughter. He must serve slightly more than four years before becoming eligible for parole, and he will receive credit for 188 days of time served.

Fleming and Laboo each received four-year prison sentenced after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. They must serve two years before they're eligible for parole and they will each receive credit for more than two years of time served.

According to Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Purva Deshpande, the plea agreement was accepted after taking into account the likelihood of securing convictions if this case proceeded to trial with the available evidence.
