Thieves Attempt Carjacking of Police Officer in Newark; Officer Fires Shots at Suspect

A wild shooting scene on a Newark street that happened early this morning has police investigating a reported carjacking. 

Multiple rounds of gunfire erupted in the 300 block of North 13th Street  shortly before 4:30 a.m. sending a heavy police presence to the scene where a search was conducted for several men involved in an attempted carjacking of a  a police officer. 

The officer reportedly fired his weapon several times at suspects who attempted to take his vehicle according to initial reports.   

Police recovered as many as nine shell casings frm the scene but it is not immediately known if the suspects fired returning shots. The officer was not injured in the shooting. Police searched several hospitals for possible victims suffering gunshot wounds. 

The suspect's vehicle was located shortly before 5 a.m. in the 100 block of South 12th Street unoccupied with several bullet holes. The vehicle was reportedly stolen out of Kearny. 

The agency that the officer works has not been released at this time.
