Teen Girl Found Shot in the Face in Newark's South Ward

Newark

A violent late Saturday evening shooting incident in Newark has a teenage girl in a local hospital suffering severe injuries and police searching for the shooter.

It happened at a party in the 100 block of Astor Street just before 11 p.m.

Police say multiple rounds of gunfire rang out in that section of the city, where residents say shooting episodes are routine occurrences on any given day.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a 17-year-old girl suffering a bullet wound in her face and a male suffering non-life threatening injuries.

EMS rushed the pair to University Hospital for treatment. The condition of the teenage girl has only been reported as serious at this time.

Police are looking into a possible verbal altercation that escalated into gunfire but has not confirmed the motive for the shooting.

The incident is under an active and ongoing investigation.
