According to a statement released by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, 57-year-old Karen A. McEvoy is facing multiple charges following an investigation into the theft of approximately $36,000 from the organization where she volunteered.

Prosecutor Mark Musella announced the arrest on Friday, crediting the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes Unit and the Teaneck Police Department for their joint efforts in the case.

The investigation began in February 2025 after Teaneck police alerted county investigators to suspected financial misconduct at the nonprofit.

Authorities say McEvoy used deceptive tactics to carry out the scheme, including forging signatures and impersonating another member of the organization to write unauthorized checks, which she then deposited into her personal bank account.

Detectives concluded that McEvoy committed theft by deception and engaged in forgery and impersonation to facilitate the fraudulent transactions.

She was taken into custody on May 30 and charged with third-degree theft by deception, third-degree forgery, and third-degree impersonation.

McEvoy has since been released pending her initial court appearance at the Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack.
