Swimmer Dies in Bergen County Lake

Bergen County authorities are investigating a drowning that occurred in a lake in Mahwah. 

 Officials said a 20  and 21-year-old male were swimming in Darlington Lake Thursday evening.

According to police, the 21-year-old victim and male companion weren’t permitted to be in the lake, which is open for swimming only on weekends this time of year.

Police said a bystander witnessed a party struggling to swim and contacted 911.

Mahwah and Ramsey police departments responded to the scene where both swimmers were retrieved from the lake.

Both parties received medical attention at the scene police said. 

One party was transferred to Valley Hospital and pronounced deceased.

“At this time, the name of the deceased party has not been released pending notification of the family”.

The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Bergen County SCUBA Task Force, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Mahwah Police Department and the Ramsey Police Department.
