Suspects in Vehicles Exchange Gunfire in Newark

Police are investigating a shooting that happened a short time ago in Newark's West Ward.

According to reports, at around 9:15 p.m. in the 500 block of South 17th Street, multiple rounds of gunfire rang out between two vehicles .

As one of the vehicles sped from the scene, a child pedestrian was struck by the vehicles.

The victim's injuries were not reported to be life threatening.

Hospital officials reported one person walked into the hospital's emergency department suffering injury from gunfire to the buttocks at around 9:30 p.m. but it is not clear if the victim was shot on South 17th Street.

In a separate shooting incident, police responded to the area of Telford Street and South Orange Avenue at around 8:45 p.m. on reports of shots fired.

Units arrived to the scene to find a male victim in is early 20's shot to the leg. He was transported to University Hospital where he was listed in stable condition.

A man shot to the back in the 20's block of Salem Street at around 7:45 p.m. was taken to the hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries. Police located several shell casings at the scene.

All the incidents are under investigation.
