Suspects Fired Shots at Police in Newark’s South Ward

UPDATE 2:34 pm No officer was struck by gunfire. Suspect 1 grazed, Suspect 2 has fatal injuries. 

Two suspects and a Newark police officer were transported to University Hospital following a shots-fired incident in the city’s South Ward on Monday afternoon.

According to preliminary information, Newark Police responded at approximately 1:15 p.m. to reports of gunfire in the area of 60 Hanford Street. 

During the response, it was reported that a suspect attempted to run officers over with a car. 
 

At this time, it is unclear whether the officer was struck or whether return fire occurred. 

Two suspects and one officer were taken to University Hospital; their conditions have not been confirmed by officials but it is being reported that the suspects were hit by gunfire. 
 

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation. 

Authorities have not yet provided additional details as the inquiry continues.
